Peonies in a Vase

Oil on 3/4 inch canvas (30 x 20 inches)

My love affair with peonies continues, but I so wish they could stick around longer than just a couple of weeks, though I guess if they were here all summer, we might take them for granted.  I love the way they look and smell and since the time they have with us is so short every year, the next best thing is a painting of them ...

Pom Pom Peony oil painting

Oil on 3/4 inch canvas (18 x 18 inches)

I love this kind of peony with the fluffy center contrasting with the outer petals.  The sunlight provided wonderful shadows as well as a nice glow in the middle.

Peony Glow

Oil on Canvas (18 x 18 inches)
SOLD

Peonies are one of my most favourite flowers.  Beside the fact that I think they are beautiful, I love the challenge of painting them; to capture the velvety colours and the swirly petals as well as the sunny, fluffy stamens at the center.

Cup of Peonies

Oil on canvas (12 x 24 inches)

Another peony painting from an abundant floral season several years ago.  I wanted to capture the low lights on the teacup and the way the petals were affected by the indirect lighting, which is a little different from bright highlights and dark shadows to which I am usually drawn.

Peony in the Sun

Oil on 1 1/2 inch gallery canvas (18 x 24 inches)

This was a big beautiful peony blooming large in the sun.  I loved working with the light and shadow contrasts and trying to capture the intensity of the colours in the shadows.

Abstract Blue Peony

Oil on Canvas (10 x 10 inches)

This is a complete abstraction of a peony flower.  I decided to let myself off the chain altogether and change up the colour from its original pink to this shades of blue version.  I played with the lines and contrasts to make it quite a bit different from the original flower.

Poolside Peonies

Oil on gallery canvas (30 x 15 inches)

This is a larger piece that I completed a while ago.  I loved the way the peonies glowed in the sunlight and the contrast against the blue of the water and the greenery surrounding them.  It makes me think of summer as we draw nearer to the shortest day of the year.

Pink Peony Heart

Oil on Canvas (8x8 in)
SOLD

This is another close-up of one of my favourite flowers, the peony.  My neighbour had a particularly nice crop of them this year and was kind enough to let me snap some reference photos of them while in bloom.  I love to work at capturing the light and shadow contrast as well as the subtle colour variations within the petals.

Peony Bud

Oil on Canvas (6x6 in)
SOLD

I was taking a picture of a much bigger bloom that was fully open, but when I saw this little guy hanging off to the side, I knew I had to paint it.

Floral Abstract I

Oil on canvas (9x12 in)
SOLD

This piece was inspired by a beautiful peony that was blooming in a neighbour’s yard.  I usually stick to a realist style, particularly with flowers since they are so beautiful on their own, but I decided to push it to the abstract so I could exaggerate the lines and colours to push them further.
